Mike Jelen is a Senior Consultant in the FTI Financial Consulting practice and is based in Washington D.C. Mr. Jelen has extensive experience using various tools to quantify and maximize firm value for clients in the industries of healthcare, finance, business lending, residential lending, car rental and construction. In the finance industry, Mr. Jelen was an instrumental part of an SEC investigation into the management of a hedge fund, an SEC/DOJ investigation of collusion and a team that reorganized the structure of a financial advisory firm and implemented a new software suite. In the rental car industry he has developed a leave-behind platform to manage the client’s interaction between Latin American licensees and the corporate base in the United States.
Professional Experience
In an SEC investigation of a hedge fund and a growth fund at a large financial company, Mr. Jelen played an integral role to determine the level of fraud present in the management of these funds. Provided with only bid ticket data for each executed trade, he built a financial model to recreate a virtual trading environment that took into account security splits, the client’s actions and historical close prices for the hundreds of thousands of transactions in question. After examining trending and analytics, Mr. Jelen’s team was able to determine whether or not fraud was present in the management of these two funds and then organized and delivered these results to the SEC.
Within the rental car industry Mr. Jelen is responsible for quantifying and resolving the operational loss of the Latin American Licensee segment of one of the industry’s largest firms. After identifying the area of weakness, he worked closely with the CFO and CAO to eliminate the problem by building a system to automate the operational process for approximately 60 licensee locations across 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. What previously was a painstakingly manual process that resulted in an annual operational loss in the millions, Mr. Jelen transformed into an automated click-button process that dramatically reduced processing time and personnel costs while increasing reporting functionality and turning a profit. During this process, Mr. Jelen spent time working in several Spanish-speaking workplaces throughout Latin America. In addition, Mr. Jelen was also peripherally involved in both the public offering and acquisition of this client.
In another investigation led by the SEC and DOJ, Mr. Jelen was required to determine if a number of large financial institutions may have been conspiring when bidding on low-risk, tax-free investment vehicles. He developed a model to record and analyze bidding activity and used this information to theorize and explore potential areas of collusion. The resulting reports were then delivered to the SEC and DOJ as independent third-party analysis.
For a large financial advisory firm, Mr. Jelen was responsible for the mapping of transfer pricing product allocation and intercompany billing. Upon completion, Mr. Jelen supervised the implementation an enterprise project management (EPM) software suite to properly handle future allocation. He then indexed financial, statutory, and internal segment reports and customized the reporting engine included with the EPM suite to better serve the needs of the client.
